103d INFANTRY DIVISION WORLD WAR II ASSOCIATION
103d Infantry Division Morning Reports
Morning reports and unit roster are created by military organizations as part of their personnel and payroll functions. These records are used by the National Personnel Records Center to verify events or assignments which may not be documented in an individuals Official Military Personnel File.
As the name Morning Reports implies, these reports were created each morning. They are an "exception based" system because they only contain information on those individuals who are not "Present and Accounted for" or who have experienced some sort of personnel action that may change their duty status. Among the reasons for being listed on a morning report are:
There are many abbreviations used to complete the daily Morning Reports. These deal with personnel actions, or wounds received during the battle, transfers, and other activities. In order to make it easier for everyone to read and understand the terms used in the Morning Report a complete list of abbreviations and medical terms used by the Company Clerks in completing the daily Morning Report has been provided.

The 103d Infantry Division (Cactus) is currently on a mission to acquire all unit Morning Reports for the period of activation, through combat, to the date the Division and its units were deactivated. When complete, this compilation will comprise one of the very few, if not only, Morning Report record for a Division in the history of the United States Army where veterans of the units, their family members, friends, or historians can search for events that impacted the life of that soldier. Although there are many units that have compiled Morning Reports, the 103d Infantry Division is the only one known that is putting together a compilation on a day by day, event by event, name by name, record for each unit.
Another facet of this research is to document the Trail of the Cactus from its arrival in the port of Marseille to liberation of Nazi concentration camps and on to victory in Austria. If you would like to contribute to the acquisition of these valuable records, please contact us.
Below are the two Morning Report Index files that list over 47,000 soldiers who served with units of the 103d Infantry Division (Cactus). As you search this database of names, you may notice duplicates; however, when you look at the the unit served you will see that the duplicates are there since teh soldier served in more than one unit. If you are searching in the Morning Reports for a specific person and you notice he served in more than one unit, you have the ability to search both unit Morning Reports to see which entries are applicable.

Researchers may note that often the individuals first name is not listed. This is due to the fact that the 103d Infantry Division Morning Reports did not list an individuals first name until July 1944, and the Army Serial Number was not listed on 103d Infantry Division Morning Reports until between July and August 1943.
What follows is the culmination of many hours of transcribing all unit Morning Reports for the 103d Infantry Division (Cactus) from March 1, 1944 through the end of July 1945. Once you find the name you are looking for on the Morning Report Index, then you can go to that specific unit and search by name to find the person. Often researchers need to cross reference names to dates, particularly when an entry lists several individuals, and for those instances please search by date.
The following Morning Reports have been transcribed from microfilm reels, obtained from the National Arches and Records Administration in College Park, Maryland.
ERRATA NOTE:
Throughout the compilation of data, every effort was made to preserve information as it was recorded on the Morning Reports, therefore there are incidents where Morning Report Clerks have made errors spelling names and serial numbers. Also during the transfer of data from the actual Morning Report historical reels, there are several errors that may appear as a result of the tedious work involved in the actual transcription. These errors were not discovered during the proofing process. One such error, that remains uncorrected due to the extensive man hours that would be required to make the corrections, is a reference throughout the Morning Reports to Camp Grant, MI. The two letter state abbreviation protocol was not adopted by the US Postal Service until 1963, thus the Morning Report Clerk was not responsible for this error. All references to CAMP GRANT, MI should be noted as CAMP GRANT, IL as Illinois was the actual location of Camp Grant, not Michigan.
