411th Regiment

The 411th Infantry Regiment was organized under the authority of Section 3 A of the National Defense Act on June 3, 1916, and became a unit of the 103d Division, organized reserves, with headquarters in Denver, Colorado in November 1921. The first Regimental commander was Colonel Homer C. Washburn, Infantry reserve, and he remained in command until 1930. The regiment had no war history after its organization for World War I until its service in World War II

The 411th regimental insignia, shown above, is half blue and half white divided dancette and represents the white mountains and blue sky of Colorado. On the shield the rattlesnake is coiled ready to strike. The Regimental motto, "Paratus Ferire" translates from Latin to "Ready to Strike" and typifies the spirit of the 411th Infantry Regiment.

On November 15, 1942, the 311th Infantry Regiment was activated at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana under the command of Colonel Donovan P. Yeuell. The Regiment was activated as part of the 103d Infantry Division commanded by Brigadier General Charles C. Haffner.

The officer cadre for the 411th was selected in August 1942, and subsequently attended Division Officers Class Number 8 at Fort Benning Georgia. The class was conducted from September 5 through October 3 1942. On October 10 1942, the cadre officers reported to Camp Claiborne where they received the enlisted cadre on October 15 1942. The enlisted cadre came from the 339th Infantry Camp Shelby Mississippi. The remaining officers reported during the period between October 20 and 23 1942.

During combat operations, units were required to submit, on a monthly basis, a report of operations. These were dubbed Unit Journals and formed an integral part of the unit's history. In addition to the Unit Journals, a Narrative of Operations for each month was prepared. The 411th Infantry Regiment historical documents were retrieved from the National Archives Records Agency in College Park, Maryland through the efforts of many volunteers, a special thanks to David Gilbert and Zack Sigler. The following are copies of these historical accounts of the 411th Infantry Regiment's operations during the period from November, 1944 through July, 1945. The Narrative of Operations are from November, 1944 through May, 1945, which includes V-E Day. As there were no combat operations after V-E Day, only the Regimental Journal covers the remaining period of daily activities for the Regiment.
