103d Infantry Division History: World War II
Battle Route through France, Germany, and into Austria
After leaving Camp Shanks, boarding several ships, and then crossing the Atlantic, the 103d Infantry Division (Cactus) landed in Marseille France. From there, they marched through Southern France to Docelles, France. From there, the Division learned they would relieve elements of the 30th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division and take up frontline positions at Chevry, France. This would be the start of the longest six months in the lives of Cactus men facing a determined enemy and some of the most fierce battles of World War II.
